Can I Paint My Fireplace Screen

Clearly, brass fireplace screens used to be all the rage. These garish brass screens seem to be in almost every habitation that was built in the 80's. Unfortunately, now they're just dated, and most homeowners who are updating their homes desire to supersede the brass with something a fiddling less…well…less brassy. But if replacing brass fireplace screen isn't in the upkeep, or you tin't detect a replacement screen for your not-standard size fireplace, painting the brass screen is really quite uncomplicated and will go a long way towards updating your fireplace.

Project Cost:

Approximately $15.

Materials & Supplies:

one. 150-grit sandpaper,

2. Painters tape,

3. High heat paint,

4. Paint brush,

Instructions:

The fireplace screen on this fireplace was a typical 1980's style contumely fireplace screen. It was in great condition, worked properly, and fit the opening perfectly, so painting seemed like the perfect way to save money on this update.

I started by sanding all of the contumely areas, both outside AND within, with 150-grit sandpaper. When it comes to painting metal, yous actually tin can't sand too much. It's best to overdo on the sanding than not do enough. Pigment is less probable to concluding on slick surfaces. (Keep in heed that when the doors are open, any brass on the dorsum sides of the doors volition be noticeable. These areas need to exist sanded equally well!)d to be sanded as well!)

Next I taped off all of the glass and bricks next to the brass. Once again, I opened the doors and taped off the within of the doors equally well.

With everything taped off, I was set up to use the paint. The good thing about loftier estrus pigment is that no primer is needed. Simply employ the paint direct to the sanded metal.

At present this is a "do as I say and not what I practise" moment. See the castor I take in the picture above? DO Not use that kind of brush for this project. I thought that since this was a uncomplicated and quick project, I could get away with using a cheap castor. I regretted that decision almost immediately. These cheap brushes have very potent bristles, and since high heat paint is quite a scrap runnier and thinner than regular paint, it's best to use a quality brush that has softer, more than pliable beard.

The directions on the high estrus paint say it's best to use 1 glaze of paint. Considering I used a low quality brush with stiff bristles, I really ended upwardly using three coats to get complete coverage.

But that's it! Painting your brass fireplace screen is fairly fast and uncomplicated, and will become a long style towards updating your fireplace.

Helpful Hints:

Be sure to use a quality brush.

If paint seeps under your painters record onto the glass, just await until the paint is completely dry, and scrape it off gently with a razor blade.
